{Wrap Up} August 2017 – Week 1 Wrap Up! + 500 Follows!

What I Reviewed:

Final Girls
By Riley Sager

Psychological Thriller. I felt a bit faked out by this, because I went into it thinking it was going to have a lot more horror than it actually ended up with. This is more of a psychological glimpse into the minds of two women, survivors of devastating trauma that happens before the book actually starts. Redwall

Middle Grade Fantasy. A really fun read that transported me right back to my childhood. I love how vastly different this felt from everything else I’ve read this year, mostly because of the entire non-human cast. Check out the full review.

What I’m Currently Reading:

Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms Series – Book 3)
by Morgan Rhodes
gd

I’m still not committed to DNFing this, so I’m just calling it “on-hold” for right now until I clear out some of the ARCs I have to read and the other buddy reads I’m committed to. The buddy read group I was participating in for this has fallen completely apart, so that’s sort of contributed to my lack of drive to actually finish it.

An Ember in The Ashes

Buddy Reading this with Chelsea from TheSuspenseIsThrillingMe! I love our buddy reads together. Chelsea always has such great points in our discussions and even if we don’t totally love a book, it’s always a hoot getting to read a book alongside her. We both discovered that we owned the two books that are out in this series and jumped straight into it. I’m thinking my hype levels are a bit high so I’m trying to temper it going forward. We’re about 40% in at the moment.

Young Adult Sci/Fi. Thank you Tor/Teen for sending me a free copy of this book to review! I’m about 35% in at the moment and enjoying this so far. One thing in particular I enjoy is Paula Stokes ability to end a chapter. There’s always a hook that keeps me wanting more.

Books I Hauled:

I didn’t bring any new books home this week – but I do have some in process. My birthday is August 11th, and Mr. Bastion told me to go crazy and order some books I’ve always wanted but the local bookstore I shop at never seem to carry, so I’ll have some new books to report on soon that I am very excited about!

Netgalley Update

I have one new addition to report this week!

Blackwing

This book has been sitting in limbo on my netgalley queue for a couple of weeks now, so I was absolutely delighted to finally get approved for a review copy! I have heard wonderful things about this book from my friends. I’m planning on starting it later this week.

Writing Update

One of the most difficult aspects of outlining and plotting fantasy that I’m finding is how difficult it is to line up plot points while also figuring out how to get characters from point A to point B. I have a lot of ideas for fantastic scenes that I’m very excited to write, but when I try to line up how I want to get characters to that point I sort of draw a blank. It’s been frustrating. I worry that it’s an issue with not being familiar enough with my characters so I’ve been trying to brainstorm deeper aspects of their personalities and what they’ve been through before the book starts that might motivate them in the future.

500+ Followers!

Bookbastion.net reached 500+ followers this week! When I started this blog back in January, it was just a method for me to keep track of what books I read for the year, and my thoughts on them, but it has slowly evolved into so much more for me. I have discovered a truly amazing community in this whole process that I love being a part of, and made some incredible friendships with certain bloggers – you know who you are – that I never would have met otherwise.

I really wanted to take a second to thank you all for welcoming me into the book blogging community. I may not get the chance to interact with you all individually, but I wanted you to know that I always appreciate all the comments and love you’ve shared for this little hobby blog of mine over the last 8 months. I appreciate each and every one of you. I don’t think of you as ‘Follows’, I think of each of you as friends. ❤

How is your month going? Reading anything great? Writing anything? Let me know in the comments section below!

  1. Congrats on 500!! *throws confetti*

I’m currently reading The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli and I enjoy it so much 🙂 I also just finishedFalling Kingdoms and to be honest, I wasn’t too impressed with it. But I heard so many good things about the series that I’ll give book 2 a try…

    Have a great day!

      1. I’m not sure if I should continue. A friend of mine said it’s getting better and better… but I don’t know. I’ll probably lend them from her instead of getting them myself or something..

  2. Congrats on 500! That’s an amazing achievement. Redwall was one of my favourites as a kid, both the book and the film. Think I need to visit that world again too

  3. This is a bit late as I’ve been sort of MIA on wordpress but congrats on 500! Your blog is one of my favorites and I’m so happy others are able to find it and enjoy it as well. As for the writing update, I’ve found using Character Profile questions to really help hammer out their personalities and traits. Cait over at PaperFury does the Beautiful People meme which has a lot of fun plot and character questions. (http://paperfury.com/beautiful-people/)

  4. A belated congratulations on reaching the 500 follower milestone.. although I believe at this stage you have more like 600! 😉
I am also thinking you probably have reviewed Blackwing by now? I am doing catch up with blogs so I have my fingers crossed that in about 300 email notifications there will be yours for Blackwing and that you enjoyed it 🙂
