What I Reviewed:
An Ember in The Ashes
by Sabaa Tahir
YA Fantasy (or Dystopian?) / Unfortunately, I’m one of the odd ones out with this book. I felt like it couldn’t exactly decide what it wanted to be and the dueling love triangles among the characters sort of put me off of it. If you haven’t yet, click on the image and check out the full review.
YA Science Fiction. This was a pleasant surprise! The opening to an action-packed duology, this has a diverse (Korean) lead character and lots of plot movement. There were a few small things I mentioned in my review that ran against it, but otherwise I thought this was quite good. Check out the review by clicking the image above.
What I’m Currently Reading:
Gathering Darkness (Falling Kingdoms Series – Book 3)
by Morgan Rhodes
Young Adult Fantasy. This buddy-read is officially back on! Our group came back together this past week and settled on finally seeing this through, so I’ll be picking this back up this week.
Ferocious
by Paula Stokes
Young Adult Sci-Fi. Tor auto-approved me for the sequel to Vicarious, (which is releasing later this month!) via Netgalley, so I’m working my way through this at a fairly fast clip to get it reviewed on time for its release date. I’m currently almost 50% through and plan on reviewing this next week.
Blackwing
by Ed McDonald
Dark Fantasy. I started reading this Netgalley approved book mostly because the premise just seems so interesting to me that I couldn’t wait any longer. Dark Fantasy is my favorite, and I can already tell that this is going to fit the bill. I’m about 25% in thus far and am very excited to see how things play out. The world is really awesome in this book so far!
Behind Closed Doors
by B.A. Paris
Psychological Thriller / Suspense. One of my friends on Goodreads mentioned having purchased this book in one of her book hauls, and because it’s one I owned and still needed to read we decided to buddy-read it together. I took it to the beach with me the other day and it was a perfect read for the day. I’m about 50% in at the moment and should finish this tomorrow.
Books I Hauled:
I ordered the majority of my birthday book haul through Book Depository, so I’m still waiting on their delivery. Once they all get here, I’m planning a full Book-Haul post of its own, so keep your eye out for that.
Netgalley/Edelweiss Update
I have one new addition to report this week!
The Dark North
by Martin Martin Dunelind, Peter Bergting (Illustrations), Henrik Pettersson (Illustrations), Clive Barker (Foreword)
I rarely get approved via Edelweiss, so I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself approved for this earlier this week. This is a compendium of short stories and illustrations that range from Norse mythology to Science Fiction and Fantasy. With a foreward written by Clive Barker, and a cover that displays a hint at the dark themes within, I’m really excited to start this! It publishes in October of this year, so I’ll probably hold off from reading/reviewing until we’re a bit closer.
Writing Update
Not much progress made here this past week unfortunately. I was on vacation this week, so my days were filled with lots of different activities that kept me pretty busy and surprisingly, out of the house for most of it. I’m going to be jumping back into it full-force this week though so hopefully I’ll have better progress to report next week.
How is your month going? Reading anything great? Writing anything? Let me know in the comments section below!
xoxo
I total understand the frustration with not being able to write. Since I started my thesis, I haven’t had much energy to sit down and write. I’m currently reading The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan. Have you read The Wheel of Time series? Oh and happy birthday! Not sure if it’s belated or in advance hahaha….hope you have/had a great one

I’ve read the first book in the Wheel of Time series and quite enjoyed it! I own the next 3, but just have to make the time to start reading them! Thanks as well for the Birthday wishes, it was on the 11th. 🙂

I love reading your wrap ups; they’re good to kick my butt to be more motivated lol. I do like the sound of that anthology you got from Edelweiss! Hopefully that’s a good one!
