{Wrap Up} September 2017 – Week 1

What I Reviewed:

As always, my reviews are linked to each photo included. Simply click on the photo to be taken to the review if you’ve not yet seen them. 🙂

by Ed McDonald

Grim / Dark Fantasy. This one far surpassed my expectations. I was so excited to be approved to read it through Netgalley. A dark fantasy debut, the world and magic system in this book has a high likelihood of kicking off a promising fantasy series that I look forward to following in the future!

by John Gwynne

Epic Fantasy. Book III In John Gwynne’s The Faithful and the Fallen series. This was an awesome read. It tore my heart out in places, but I’ve come to expect that from this series. The characters remain awesome and barring book 4 turning out to be just terrible, I think this series will be a favorite of mine for years to come.

The Screaming Staircase – Lockwood & Co. #1
by Jonathan Stroud

Middle Grade / Paranormal. I was really craving a spooky read, and this one hit all the right marks. A “read now” offering on Netgalley, I was so glad to get that email offering it. I’ve had this series on my list for awhile now but no idea when I could actually get to reading it. Will definitely keep my eye out for the next books in the series!

What I’m Currently Reading:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians V: The Last Olympian
by Rick Riordan

Middle Grade Fantasy / Mythology. At last, I’ve made it to the final book in the series! I can’t believe I’m already here. I’m going to be sad to leave Percy Jackson behind after this. I’m about 50% through so far and excited to see how the prophecy factors into the rest of events.

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld
by Patricia A. McKillip

Fantasy. This was a Netgalley approval from a couple months back. I’m about 20% in at the moment and find it a pleasant challenge. The prose is dense, and it reads a little slow (having originally been published in 1974) but I’m enjoying it thus far. It feels like an old fairytale so far.

Books I Hauled:

An  actual photo of me, still waiting for The Mistborn Trilogy to arrive in the post from Book Depository. Now I’m really glad I didn’t wait any longer to post my August Book haul from my birthday. I placed that order on August 8th, and here we are a month later. I contacted Book Depository about it a couple weeks ago, and after some back and forth where they insisted they were delivered (they weren’t, as all my mail goes to my post office box) they agreed to reship them. That was about 7 days ago – so hopefully they’ll be here by Monday or Tuesday at the latest….

Netgalley/Edelweiss Update

I have one new approval to report, this time from Edelweiss.

The Wild Inside
by Jamey Bradbury

Listed as Literary Fiction mixed with Thriller, I have to admit it was the cover that really drew me to this one. Given that it’s publication date is in March of 2018, I probably won’t be reviewing it on the blog for some time.

Writing Update

So big news, I finally feel like I have enough worldbuilding, character building, setting and plotting done on my WIP to begin it. I putzed around a bit with a sort of origin story set within the world but unrelated to the direct story I’m planning on writing in order to familiarize myself with elements of it, and ended up writing nearly 3,500 words of actual prose. It was a very exciting feeling to actually be delving into the world and getting closer to the story.

I also spent some time brainstorming potential titles, and I feel like I’ve finally settled on one. I might share it once I sit with it a little bit, because in all honesty this is still early days and I’ll probably change my mind a million or so times before it finally settles. For now, it’s just Work in Progress (WIP). For those of you who may care to know, it’s a middle Grade fantasy novel that borders on YA. I feel really compelled by the characters and the story at this point, and writing in those genres right now is where I feel the most pull. Glad I’ve got so much reading experience in those areas to help me along a bit.

I plan on jumping in next week and actually focusing on churning out a word count from now until the New Year. Wish me luck!

How is your month going? Reading anything great? Writing anything? Let me know in the comments section below!

  1. I must have been sitting next to you on the same bench when you took that picture of yourself waiting for your Book Depository order….. I ordered 4 books in August – all 4 shipped out separately – and so far I’ve gotten all of them except for the first one that shipped. Trying to be a patient bookworm but it’s HARD! I saved over 50$ ordering from them so I can’t complain too much. But yup, I look just like you in that picture! 😂

    1. Oh my goodness, I’m sorry you’re going through the same issue with Book Depository. The Mistborn Trilogy was the first set of books that supposedly shipped to me too out of my order, and they never arrived. It’s frustrating because I’ve got a planned buddy read with Chelsea over at http://www.thesuspenseisthrillingme.com, and she ordered the same box set – hers is also lost in the mail so our buddy read is on hold before it ever started. 😦

      1. Oh no! Go figure when you have a time restriction this happens! I still haven’t read the Mistborn Trilogy yet either…… I have it on my shelf but never felt like the time was right. I hope to get to it in October or November. Can’t wait to see what you think of it!

  3. I’ve had the The Faithful and the Fallen series on my TBR for far too long, it’s def time to bite the bullet. The covers always make me stop in my tracks in my bookstore lol. I’d also really like to return to Percy’s world & finish the Olympians series especially since I already read Magnus Chase & felt like I was missing some info smh 🙈BTW I got my Mistborn boxset X-mas 2015 from Bookdepository & the same “lost in the mail” situation happened to me. I ended up getting mine 1.5mths later. I hope you get yours soon 🤞🏼

    1. Omg the covers to the Faithful and the Fallen series are so beautiful, especially all lined up on a bookshelf. That’s crazy that Mistborn seems to take so long to ship for everyone I talk to who orders it off Book Depository. I think it must have to do with the weight of the boxset or something.

      1. That’s probably the only reason i still order from Bookdepository…awesome spines & covers lol. I hope you get your boxset soon *fingers crossed* I buddy read the first book with my hubby when I received mine & loved it. Now I just need to motivate myself read the next one haha! Happy reading 🙂

  4. Hmm The Forgotten Beasts of Eld sounds interesting. While the idea of dense prose is a little off putting, I’ve been really enjoying older books recently so maybe I’ll look into it eventually. I also hadn’t heard of The Screaming Staircase but I’ve been in the mood for scary reads and have been building up my Halloween TBR. I just grabbed it off of NetGalley, so thank you for the heads up that it’s a Read Now book. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the shipping issues with TBD. I have had a similar headache with Amazon with a book listed as both in-stock and prime eligible, sweet 2 day shipping! Just kidding, it told me at check out that the estimate would be sometime mid-October womp womp.

That’s such exciting news with the WIP, good luck writing!

  5. I just got Blackwing in a book box so that makes me super excited to read it!! 😀 I keep looking at the Faithful and Fallen series every time I go in the bookstore but they are so huge I’m always like maybe next time. haha. I have been disappointed the last two times I ordered from book depository 😦 it never used to be like that. I don’t know what changed with their shipping but it was messed up the last two times I ordered. It’s a bummer because it’s the only place I can get those gorgeous UK covers in the US…

    1. Oh that’s so great that you got Blackwing! It really is a wild story – the author is so creative.

I hear you on the Faithful and the Fallen series though. I think they’re fantastic books, but I plan to read one a month because they’re just so big that I have to put some space between them.

Sorry to hear that you’ve had poor experiences with Book Depository too. As a US resident I completely agree, I chose to order from them for the covers, but I wish it didn’t take so long!
