Wrap Up | May 2019

I feel kind of awkward writing this post after just having returned from hiatus, but I really want to start getting back into the habit of blogging with regularity again, and so here I am. I’ve had a rough 2019 in terms of reading and especially reviewing, mostly due to my living situation not really being the most conducive to actually getting much reading done.

Now I’m back on my own again and so excited to be able to prioritize my favorite hobby once again. I’m behind my personal goals for the year in terms of how much I’d like to have read, but I’m excited to start catching up!

Reviews |

I read and reviewed two books this month since returning from hiatus. First up was The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie.

The Raven Tower Cover

Fantasy | This was an impulse buy earlier this year when I was browsing in the cutest little bookstore. It felt wonderful taking a new book baby home with me again. Inspired by Hamlet, Ann Leckie frames human heartache within the second person perspective of an omniscient narrator, the God of Iraden. Stylistically unique and inventive storytelling.

Next up, I read Beyond Redemption by Michael R. Fletcher.

Grimdark Fantasy | This book was exactly what I needed when I’m trying to break back into a blogging habit. Creative, fast-paced and filled to the brim with memorable characters and magic systems, this book hooked me early and kept me turning pages until the very end!

Netgalley |

No updates at this time. I’m sort of holding off netgalley at the moment in favor of working through a backlog of owned books I haven’t read yet.

Bookstagram |

I didn’t just take a hiatus from reviewing, I also took a hiatus from my bookstagram account. I really, really missed this platform though and was really excited to start flexing my photography and design skills again. This week, I posted 3 new photo sets to my feed. I say photo sets, because I’ve decided that while I really enjoy using the inside cover photo for my feed, there are so many beautiful covers that I felt I was neglecting by not photographing.

So my main change with bookstagram is that I’m now posting 2 pictures at the same time – the inside cover and then followers can click through to see the front cover. If you’re not following me yet, you can find me on instagram @bookbastion.

Book Tags|

Haven’t had the chance to participate in any booktags yet, bit I’m anxious to get back to it!

Top 10 Tuesday |

No update on this front, but I hope to get back into it soon!

Reflections |

It’s been a crazy half year. I wish I had been able to dedicate more time to reading, reviewing and spending time with all of you. It seemed like every time I was beginning to find my footing, the ground slipped out from under me again. During that time, it was all I could do to prioritize me, and to try and rebuild a social life from the ashes of the last chapter of my old one. I think I’m finally getting there though, and I’m so excited to be back doing what I love.

This week has been especially amazing – considering how welcoming and accomodating you’ve all been. It’s been amazing to see old friends reaching out, or at least pretending to remember me when I started blogging my thoughts again. Thank you all so much for your kind words.

I’m going to take things slow as I get back into the habit. I’m all about balance right now in my life: work/social life and reading. It’s all important to me and I’m bound and determined to prioritize it all. Who knows how successful I’ll be – but here goes nothing!

How is your reading year going? Reading anything great? Writing anything? What have I missed this year that I need to know??

  1. I love the cover of The Raven Tower. I wanted to read it in May and even borrowed it from the library, but it’s one I have to be in the mood for. I read a page or two but wasn’t feeling it at the time. I will return to it though.

  2. Well I remember you! 😁 I’m sorry you reached a point where life interfered with your reading, but I’m so happy you’re recovering. I understand life making this book blogging thing really hard. Hoping you continue to progress! And thanks for sharing these books. I’m adding The Raven Tower to my TBR. 😄
