Book Tags & Awards | The Versatile Blogger Award

I was recently nominated by my dear friend Jenna @ BookmarkYourThoughts, who was so generous and charitable to overlook my extended hiatus and still nominate me for this award! Thank you Jenna!

If you’re not following Jenna’s blog yet – you’ve got to check it out. The aesthetics are gorgeous and her reviews are always great. She’s a strong voice in the book blogging community and someone who inspires me greatly. Make sure to check out her blog if you haven’t already!

The Rules

  1. Thank the person who nominated you.
  2. Leave a link to their blog.
  3. Tell us 7 things about yourself.
  4. Nominate 15 bloggers/bloggers you’ve discovered recently or follow regularly.

One | I know American Sign Language

My dad is deaf, so I grew up with ASL and deaf culture being a big part of our household. In our house communicating with two languages (English and sign language) at the same time was common so that my dad was able to be a part of the conversation. Anything we watched on television, we watched with subtitles – I actually prefer to watch TV and movies with subtitles as an adult rather than without them because I’ve grown so used to them!

I am the slowest signer in my family by far. I’m extremely uncoordinated and have the worst memory for signs. It’s something that I’m constantly working on and hope to continue to improve. Thank goodness my dad is patient with me and always willing to help me along the way!

Two | I have a twin brother

We’re actually fraternal twins, though when we were really young our parents dressed us alike and had our hair cut similarly to look more like each other. We definitely diverged in our teenage years and pretty much became polar opposites of each other! I’m the good twin, he’s the evil one. I’m the good looking one – well… you get the gist. 😂

Three | I have an unhealthy obsession with the Golden Girls

Image result for golden girls gif

I grew up on the Golden Girls and have probably seen every episode like 500 times. I wish I was exaggerating, but I’m definitely not. The Golden Girls is like television’s form of comfort food to me. I play it in the background when I’m cooking or cleaning – and I pretty much always set aside time at the end of the day to watch an episode or two before bed.

I know the lines by heart and friends in my real life often have to deal with me saying: “this reminds me of something that happened in the Golden Girls,” on a daily basis. But what can I say besides -thank you for being a friend? I also have these girls to thank for my biting wit and sense of humor that I exercise on the daily in real life.

Four | I’m woefully under-traveled

Related image

I don’t even have a passport! I do want to travel more, but to be honest the idea of it fills me with a lot of anxiety! I hate driving in city-traffic or in places I’m not familiar with, and I can really only take large crowds in short doses. I’m a country bumpkin I suppose. A hobbit in need of his Shire to come home to after any sort of journey away from home.

I’d need a good travel buddy to go with me if I ever took a vacation out of the area! I just am not the type that would have fun on my own – unless I holed up somewhere with a good book that is!

Five | I have the weirdest taste in music

Related image

Seriously, it’s weird. I have trouble defining my taste in music when people ask. I gravitate towards female singers, for sure, but my Spotify playlists of saved songs clearly indicate that I am genre jumper for sure. Some of my favorite tracks and the genres they are from are:

  • Dynamite – Sigrid (Indie Acoustic)*this whole album actually
  • In Vain – Within Temptation (Symphonic Metal)
  • Taxi Ride – Tori Amos (Indie/Alternative)
  • Handmade Heaven – Marina (Pop)
  • Death – Cellar Darling (Progressive Rock)

Six | I am a huge horror buff

Who knew that you could be both a huge Golden Girls nerd, and also obsessed with horror movies? I just love being scared! Ever since I was a kid and would sneak away to watch scary movies on the Sci-Fi Channel (back when it was still called the Sci-Fi Channel and was actually good!) without my parents knowing.

It instilled in me a love for the genre. I actually think a lot of horror stories can be quite cathartic in a way. The genre never gets the credit it is due – but has experienced a resurgence in recent years thanks to Ari Aster, Jordan Peele and movies like the remake of Suspiria. I’m really excited to see where the genre goes next!

Seven | My doggo’s name is Fiona

Image may contain: Bentley Gallo, smiling, dog and text

I’m not interesting enough to come up with a seventh thing about myself, so I’ll introduce my favorite thing/best friend in the entire world to you all.

Fiona is an Australian Cattle Dog mix that I rescued from a southern state shelter when she was a pup. She and I are very connected and I don’t know how I would have gotten through the last half year of my life without her.

There we have it! That was fun – and challenging! Who knew I was so uninteresting that I would struggle to come with seven interesting things about myself! This is why I lean so heavily on books. They’re half my personality at this point. 😂

  1. Congrats on the award, Bentley, I love reading this post! It’s always nice to get to know our fellow bloggers 🙂
I didn’t know that you know sign language and have a twin brother, and you made me laugh when you said you’re the good one and your brother is the evil one… lol
Thanks for the nomination, I’ll do the award post as soon as possible!

  2. Ah, such a cool post!
I also prefer watching stuff with subtitles… I noticed it quite a few times that i would have missed some part of a convo if i hadn’t had the subtitle, cuz someone is whispering or the convo is over a phone, etc.

I’m totes with you on driving. I used to drive in my home town where i knew where i’m going, but that’s about it. Anything else fills me with dread 😀

    Doggy is adorable! ❤

    Thanks for the tag!

    1. Thank you, Norrie! And you’re welcome!

I’m always missing words here and there when I’m watching something. It makes me crazy if there are no subtitles because I just end up feeling like I’m missing out on half the experience.

I’m glad we’re both on the same page about driving! I feel so awkward sometimes because of my avoidance of driving in places I don’t know, but I just feel safer sticking to what I’m familiar with.

  3. Awe, of course! You’re still an amazing blogger, so it’s very well deserved! And oh my goodness … you’re such a sweetheart! Thank you for the kind words! ❤

I'm also working on the travel front … SOME DAY! I know VERY little sign language but I'd like to relearn it — we used some basics with my brother, who has autism and is non-verbal. He knows "no" and "please" VERY well lol!

I love indie/folk music and I love how you but Within Temptations on your list! I discovered them back in high school and still love them!

FIONA IS ADORABLE!! I love dogs so much! My friends say I have a sixth sense of knowing when a dog is around ha-ha. I hope I'll be lucky enough to adopt one soon!!

It's great to learn more about you! ❤ Also … you're so photogenic!!

    1. Thank you, Jenna! You’re so sweet and I’m lucky to call you a friend in the blogging community. 🙂

That is awesome that you and your family communicate with your brother using sign language. It really is such a useful language. My siblings and I are all hearing, and all of my siblings have hearing children, but when they were babies they taught them basic signs like “Please” and “no” and “milk” or “food”. It’s amazing how sign language really can become a tool for people who can’t verbalize their needs to express themselves.

I also discovered Within Temptation when I was in high school! I’ve loved them ever since. I actually got the opportunity to see them in concert for the first time in March, at the House of Blues in Boston. Sharon Den Adel was just as amazing in person as I’d expect her to be!

I hope you do get to adopt a dog of your own soon! They’re the best for companionship and support.

And awww thank you! I got lucky in that shot and Fiona is the truly cute one. 🙂

  4. OMG these facts are so interesting!!
I love twins, I think it is the coolest thing in the world to have a twin 🙂
I also am an under traveler because of my anxiety so high five!
And I think you are great for learning sign language no metter how good you are at it!
    Thanks for tagging me 😀

  5. Oooh, congratulations. And Fiona is such a cutie!

I’m trying to use ASL more often. I don’t know a lot, but when I communicate with people with hearing impairments, I try to sign for the words and phrases I do know. I also sign when working with babies as often as I can. Props to you for being so knowledgeable!

  6. AWWW, thank you so much for the nomination! ❤

I relate SO MUCH to your #4—I don't have a passport either and traveling just sounds so stressful to me! There's so much scheduling, research, rushing around to sight see and whatnot involved—it just reminds me of the craziness of school and I'm like 'no thanks'. But at the same time, I feel like if I could find a really good friend who's calm and travels a lot and wouldn't jam-pack a trip to go with me, I could (maybe) be up for it.

And yessss, I also feel like reading/books takes up so much of my personality. 😂

Also, your dog is so adorable!
