In an effort to produce more regular content on my blog between reviews, I’ve decided to regularly participate in WWW Wednesday! For those of you who might not be aware, this is a weekly book blogging meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words.
The purpose of this post is just to update those who follow the blog as to what I’m currently in the midst of reading, and have also just finished. I’m also hoping that it helps provide me a necessary boost of motivation in the middle of the week to power on through to the weekend!
Without further ado, lets dive in!
What are you currently reading?
I’m in the final quarter of The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman now, and so happy to finally understand what all the hype is about. This is the first time I’ve ever read this series! This will be an interesting one to review. Keep your peepers peeled, because my review will be out either later this week or early next!
Synopsis:
Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal–including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.
Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want–but what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.
What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished reading Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl. This was an awesome YA science fiction yarn filled with mystery, suspense and really creative storytelling! I loved every bit of it from start to finish.
Synopsis:
Once upon a time, back at Darrow-Harker School, Beatrice Hartley and her five best friends were the cool kids, the beautiful ones. Then the shocking death of Jim – their creative genius and Beatrice’s boyfriend – changed everything.
One year after graduation, Beatrice is returning to Wincroft – the seaside estate where they spent so many nights sharing secrets, crushes, plans to change the world – hoping she’ll get to the bottom of the dark questions gnawing at her about Jim’s death.
But as the night plays out in a haze of stilted jokes and unfathomable silence, Beatrice senses she’s never going to know what really happened.
Then a mysterious man knocks on the door. Blithely, he announces the impossible: time for them has become stuck, snagged on a splinter that can only be removed if the former friends make the harshest of decisions.
Now Beatrice has one last shot at answers… and at life.
And so begins the Neverworld Wake.
What do you think you’ll read next?

Move aside other planned reads, because now that I have a copy of this book in my hands – there’s nothing standing in my way from devouring Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames. I absolutely loved the first book in this series (Kings of the Wyld) which I read last month. Can’t wait to see what he’s cooked up next! I’m really intrigued as this story appears to follow a brand new band and their heroics after the events of the first story.
Synopsis:
Live fast, die young.
Tam Hashford is tired of working at her local pub, slinging drinks for world-famous mercenaries and listening to the bards sing of adventure and glory in the world beyond her sleepy hometown.
When the biggest mercenary band of all rolls into town, led by the infamous Bloody Rose, Tam jumps at the chance to sign on as their bard. It’s adventure she wants – and adventure she gets as the crew embark on a quest that will end in one of two ways: glory or death.
It’s time to take a walk on the wyld side.
Next Up on the Buddy Read Docket
This is the year for me to check off the big fantasy titles that I’ve been meaning to read for ages from my TBR list and The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Staveley has been near the top of must-reads for quite a long time now!
When I retuned to the blogosphere, my dear friend Priscilla, aka Scrill over at Vicariously & Voraciously asked if I’d be up for a buddy read. My answer: of course! I love buddy reading with Scrill because she’s always present and engaged in the read, and really makes me think about the plot and characters as we go.
I can’t wait to dive into this series! We’re still setting an actual start date for the buddy read – but it will be soon!
Synopsis:
The circle is closing. The stakes are high. And old truths will live again…
The Emperor has been murdered, leaving the Annurian Empire in turmoil. Now his progeny must bury their grief and prepare to unmask a conspiracy.
His son Valyn, training for the empire’s deadliest fighting force, hears the news an ocean away. He expected a challenge, but after several ‘accidents’ and a dying soldier’s warning, he realizes his life is also in danger. Yet before Valyn can take action, he must survive the mercenaries’ brutal final initiation.
Meanwhile, the Emperor’s daughter, Minister Adare, hunts her father’s murderer in the capital itself. Court politics can be fatal, but she needs justice. And Kaden, heir to an empire, studies in a remote monastery. Here, the Blank God’s disciples teach their harsh ways – which Kaden must master to unlock their ancient powers. When an imperial delegation arrives, he’s learnt enough to perceive evil intent. But will this keep him alive, as long-hidden powers make their move?

I’m honestly so happy you’re reading Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy! Perfect timing too, since he’s adding to it (I’VE WAITED FOR OVER A DECADE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN) and I’ve heard ALL good things!

Jenna, I’m so glad you’re such a huge Pullman fan! I loved The Golden Compass and can’t wait to see where the story goes next. I bet it must feel awesome to see the story continuing after so long since the main series ended.

It is! I was honestly so shocked but in the best way possible! The trilogy ends well and doesn’t NEED more books … like, it feels complete? But I ALWAYS wanted more just because I love the story and characters so much!

This was my first foray into Pullman’s work as well. I really enjoyed it though. Feels a lot like the Chronicles of Narnia in its writing style.
